WiFi: Connect to the eduroam Wireless Network | Chromebook & Chrome OS

Overview

In order to connect to the eduroam wireless network from a Chromebook or Chrome OS device, you have to manually specify the network connection settings. These instructions will walk you through the process of finding and setting up all the necessary options.

How to enable Wi-Fi and access the network list

1. At the bottom right corner of the screen, click or tap on the clock showing the current time.
2. From the options that appear, select "Not connected".
   • Note: If you see a network name and signal strength instead, you are already connected to a network.
3. If Wi-Fi is currently disabled, select "Turn on Wi-Fi". If Wi-Fi is already on, a list of available networks will be visible.

If eduroam is not listed as an available network

• You may be out of range. If you are outdoors, try moving inside or closer to a building.
• It may be a temporary problem. Sometimes waiting a few moments or restarting your device will fix it.
• You may need to set up eduroam manually. Please see "Adding eduroam manually" below.

Connecting to eduroam

Use these network settings when connecting to the network.

1. If you see eduroam in the list of available networks, tap on it to start the connection process.
2. You should see three options listed at first: EAP Method, Identity, and Password. For each option, enter the information specified below.
   • Identity: Your UT email address. Use NetID@vols.utk.edu (students) or NetID@utk.edu (faculty/staff)
   • Password: Your NetID password
   • EAP Method: EAP-TTLS (note: this is different from EAP-TLS, be careful not to get them confused)
3. Once you set the EAP method, more settings should appear on the screen. Continue to fill out each option as specified below.
   • EAP Phase 2 Authentication: MSCHAPv2 (note the "v2" here)
   • Server CA Certification: Do Not Check
   • Subject Match: radius.ns.utk.edu
   • Subject Alternative Name Match: Leave this option blank.
   • Domain Suffix Match: Leave this option blank.
   • Anonymous Identity: @utk.edu
4. Press the Connect button to join the network.
   • If you have registered your device on the UT network before, you should now be connected to eduroam.
   • If you have never registered this device before, you may see a message warning that there is no internet connection. To register, go to support.utk.edu in your web browser and follow the instructions.
   • If any of the above settings are incorrect, you will get an error message: "Network connection error. Failed to connect to network “eduroam”. Username/password incorrect or EAP-auth failed."

Adding eduroam manually

Follow these instructions if eduroam does not appear in your list of networks, or if you are unable to connect to the network after following the normal instructions above.

Option 1 - Add using "Join other network" - Recommended

1. At the bottom right corner of the screen, click or tap on the clock showing the current time.
2. Select the Settings button, which has a gear icon like so:
3. Under the "Network" section, select "Wi-Fi" to enter Wi-Fi settings.
4. Select the "Join other network" button. It should be directly to the left of the Wi-Fi on/off switch, and it has a small + symbol on it.
5. Enter the network name (or SSID) as "eduroam" (no quotes).
6. Choose "WPA2 Enterprise" as the network security option.
7. For the remaining settings, refer to the steps above (2 & 3 from "Connecting to eduroam")
8. Once the network is saved, your device should automatically connect to eduroam the next time it is in range.

Option 2 - Using eduroam configuration assistant

Please note: a working internet connection is required to use this method. Use public Wi-Fi or a cellular hotspot if you cannot access the internet via the UT network.

1. Go to cat.eduroam.org
2. Click the button that says "Click here to download your eduroam installer".
3. Select "The University of Tennessee, Knoxville" from the list of organizations.
4. Click the button that says "Chrome OS". A message will appear once you do, click "Continue" to download the configuration file.
5. After downloading the file, open Chrome and navigate to "chrome://net-internals/#chromeos" (no quotes).
6. Click the "Import ONC file" button. If prompted to select a file, choose the one that you just downloaded a moment ago, which should be named "eduroam-chromeos-TUoTK.onc".
7. There is no confirmation that the network has been added successfully. If you aren't sure whether the installation was successful, you will have to manually check your known networks to see if eduroam is listed there. (Click "Known Networks" after following steps 1-3 under option 1 above).
