Tips for Troubleshooting Your Tech at Home

Overview

Do you have questions about your technology and don’t know where to start?  Here are some helpful tips and tricks.

If your Internet connection is flaky or you are having trouble with Wi-Fi at home, start with your service provider.

They can troubleshoot your home Internet equipment and offer suggestions.  Pro tip: try connecting directly to your cable modem or router with an Ethernet cable to see if you get better performance. Try rebooting your modem or router.

If you are having trouble with your computer, you have a few options.

  • If your computer isn’t running well, download UT’s antivirus software to check for viruses & malware.  If that doesn’t do the trick, contact the OIT HelpDesk.  Our Desktop Support team is available to help.
  • Try rebooting your computer. (No really, this works more than you might think!)
  • Is your keyboard or touchpad broken?  What about your charger?  Do you have other hardware-related issues?
    • If your computer is under warranty, contact your manufacturer.
    • Major manufacturers, like AppleDell, and Lenovo, offer support in a variety of ways, including online and chat.
    • Consider purchasing a USB keyboard, mouse, or a new charger to get you through.

Do you want to have the best experience with Zoom?

Follow the Zoom User Guides for tips on the best experience.  Pro tip: connect your computer to a WIRED connection while working or learning remotely, whenever possible.

Is your camera not working when you are connecting to your office computer?

When you are connecting remotely to your office computer, don’t forget to switch back to the computer in front of you for online meetings.  You’ll need to use your home computer’s camera and microphone for Zoom, not your office computer.

Specific applications require UT’s Virtual Private Network (VPN) to run.

Use the VPN to connect to the following resources:

  • Remote to your office computer
  • T-Storage (H: and I: drive)
  • IRIS SAP GUI
  • Edit your OIT Public Linux Environment/Volweb and OIT-Supported WordPress sites.

Do you need help connecting to the H: and I: drive (T-Storage) from off-campus?

Follow the instructions for Windows and Mac to connect to your home area or H: drive.
