Panopto: Use the Discussion, Notes, and Bookmarks Features as a Student

Overview

Follow the instructions below to learn how to make Bookmarks, Notes, Captions, and join Discussion on Panopto videos in the Panopto video player interface.

Instructions

Locating the tabs for each feature

On the left side of the screen in, you'll see a series of tabs for Details, Captions, Discussion, Notes, and Bookmarks. Click each tab to reveal its contents.

Discussion

  1. Click the Discussion tab to open the interface. (If the video owner does not have discussion enabled, you will not be able to see the Discussion tab available to you.)
  2. A box pops up beside the video player (and under the Primary Video window if you have it enabled) to allow viewers to enter questions and comments. Everyone with access to the video can see the discussion thread. Be respectful of this feature. The owner of the video may delete comments.
  3. Once you add a question or comment, other viewers can reply. The owner of the video also has the option to download discussions, delete specific comments, or disable discussions. Zoom Cloud recordings imported to Panopto will automatically include chats made in Zoom.
  4. Discussion content also appears in the search function within Panopto.

Notes

Follow these directions to take notes in a Panopto video. Notes are tied to your NetID (Network ID) login within Canvas and are only visible to others if you choose to share them. Video owners can also disable the ability to take notes in a video or disable the ability for you to share your notes with others. You may also download your notes if the feature is enabled.

  1. Click on the Notes tab on the left-hand side of the video interface.
  2. Here you will be able to enter notes, review them, download them, or share with others (if enabled). To share your notes, click Make Public.
  3. Each note is associated with the time it was entered in the video player. Notes are clickable, too. If you click a note, the video player will jump to the point in the video where the note was made.
  4. The Make Public/Make Private option allows users to make their notes public or return them to private if the feature is enabled by the video owner.

Bookmarks

Click the Bookmarks tab to open the feature. Bookmarks are searchable within the Panopto web interface. If you have bookmarks in any video, a Bookmarks tab will appear on the left-hand side of the Panopto web interface at https://utk.hosted.panopto.com.

  1. Click the Bookmarks tab
  2. Enter a bookmark note in the text box and hit enter. Like notes, bookmarks are time stamped and searchable within Panopto. If you click a bookmark, the video player will jump to the point in the video where the bookmark was made.

Captions

Click the Captions tab to reveal captions for the video in the left-hand toolbar area. You can also view captions by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the video player.

  • Captions are clickable and each text block is associated with a time stamp. Clicking the caption block will take you to that point in the video.
  • Captions are also searchable using the search bar above the feature tabs on the left side of the screen.
