Overview
Canvas Course Names are pulled from the UTK Timetable course listing. Instructors may prefer to edit Course Names for clarity, but avoid major changes that could confuse students. For example, if your course title is Special Topics, we recommend renaming it to something more descriptive so students can easily identify the correct course site.
Certain helpful details to include in course names:
- Time of class meeting
- Days of the week of the class meeting
- A name more descriptive of the subject being taught
While none of the above information is required, many instructors find that including some of the course naming strategies helps them to differentiate their different course sites within Canvas. For example, Bio 101 T/TH_11:00 am.

You can change the course name for any of your Online@UT (Canvas) course sites.
- Locate your Canvas course site.
- On the bottom left of the course navigation menu, select the Settings link.
- Select the Course Details tab.
- In the Name: field, enter your desired course name (255 character limit).
- Select the Update Course Details button at the bottom of the page.
NOTE: We do not recommend changing the Course Code: field, as these codes follow a specific naming convention to make them easier to track and identify.
