Panopto: Safari Not Playing Videos in Canvas

Summary  

If you have experienced playback issues with Panopto videos in Canvas while using Safari, please follow these instructions to remedy the situation. 

Error Message in Safari 

You may have seen a message stating the following while using Safari to watch Panopto videos in Canvas: 

“We were unable to sign you in because your browser is not accepting cookies. Click here to sign in. To open this page in a new tab, click here.” 

Remedies

The following remedies provide ways you can view the video. 

  1. Follow on-screen instructions 

  • Follow the on-screen instructions to open the page in a new tab 

  1. Security Preferences 

  • Apple uses privacy settings in Safari that may be limiting your ability to view videos. 

  • To change those settings, navigate to Safari > Preferences > Privacy > Website Tracking. Make sure the Cross-site Tracking button is not checked.  

  • Refresh the Canvas page you were trying to view and it should work. 

  1. Other browsers 

  • If you’d prefer not to turn off Cross-site Tracking, try using Chrome, Edge, or Firefox instead
