I want to change my name in the UT Directory
Overview
DASH and/or Banner control the information displayed in the UT directory or email. This includes, but is not limited to, your name, phone number, job title, position, and department. The process for changing your name varies depending on your affiliation with the University. Please note that information changes will take 2-3 business days to synchronize to all UT systems, including the directory, email, and Canvas.
Faculty/Staff
Faculty and Staff can change their name in DASH by following the instructions in KB: DASH: Editing Personal Information. If you continue to see an incorrect name after 3-5 days of updating it in DASH, the employee can submit a request through hrassist@tennessee.edu, and it will be automatically routed to the correct HR office for entry.
Students
Students can contact the One Stop office to change their name. For more information, please visit https://onestop.utk.edu/contact-updates/. If you are affiliated with more than one UT campus, you must also contact the respective offices of those campuses.
NOTE: If you see an incorrect name in Banner, remember that Banner displays your Chosen Name and First Name.
To update your chosen name:
- Go to myutk.utk.edu and sign in with your NetID and password.
- Click My Resources.
- Click Change Chosen Name.
Student Employees
Student Employees must check with One Stop AND your departmental Human Resources to update their information in DASH. Student employees must follow both the steps outlined above for Faculty/Staff and Students.
About Legal Names
While we require a legal name on file, users have the option to change their display name in the directory, email, and other UT systems, allowing them to use a preferred name instead. A formal legal name change is not required to use this feature. The legal name will continue to be stored in the directory under the tnOfficialName attribute, but it will no longer be their display name. The user must work with the corresponding departments above to set a display name based on their affiliation(s).
