Canvas: Use Equation Editor on an Exam

Tags Canvas

Overview

Canvas has an integrated tool for math and science formulas based on LaTeX, the industry standard for academic publication. The LaTeX Math Editor is built into the Rich Content Editor. The Rich Content Editor is used in features that support the editor (Announcements, Assignments, Discussions, Pages, Quizzes, or Syllabus). The Math Editor can be used for basic mathematical formatting for introductory math courses or for more advanced mathematical text for higher-level math courses. Both students and instructors have access to the editor.

Instructions

  1. Open the Rich Content Editor using one of the Canvas features that support the Editor.

  2. To open the Math Editor, click the Insert Math Equation icon [1]. You can also open the Math Editor from the Rich Content Editor menu bar. Click the Insert link [2], then select the Equation option [3]. Note: To view the Insert Math Equation icon, you may need to click the Options icon [4].

  3. The Equation Editor provides a toolbar for inserting various operators and symbols [1]. You can enter expressions in the equation field [2]. You can view and edit or hide the LaTeX code behind an expression by clicking the Directly Edit LaTeX toggle [3].

  4. Be sure to enter your equation characters first and then select the Insert Equation button.
