Canvas: Student Photo Rosters and Privacy Concerns

Faculty can access their class photo rosters through the myUTK portal. Navigate to the My Schedule section of myUTK and click the camera icon next to the corresponding class.

Photos can be seen only by the instructor of record for each class and cannot be seen by enrolled students. In addition to student photos, instructors also have access to the Tennessee ID (TNID) and email address for each student.

Additionally, the public posting of student photos is prohibited by the University of Tennessee and is a violation of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

This means that instructors should not:

  • Share UTK Student Photo Roster photos with anyone, including your colleagues, or other students enrolled in your classes
  • Post roster photos on your blog or public Web site
  • Print the UTK Photo Roster--unless you keep the paper copies in a secure location and shred them when they are no longer needed
