The UTK Network Registration service available at http://netreg.utk.edu allows users and administrators to self-register hosts (computers, printers, servers, etc.) on the UTK network for DNS, DHCP, and IP address reservation. There are three (3) types of host registration available to users of the UTK network:
DYNAMIC-DHCP
Most end-user devices, such as computers, tablets, and smartphones, will be registered on the UTK campus as DYNAMIC-DHCP. All devices registered by students and all devices on the wireless network will receive this type of network registration. Characteristics of this type of registration are:
- The device will receive an IP address dynamically allocated out of the network range defined in DHCP.
- The device will have a consistent DNS name associated with the dynamically assigned IP address.
STATIC-DHCP
STATIC-DHCP allows users to register devices with a consistently reserved IP address. This network registration classification is only available to faculty and staff on the wired network and may require justification before an address is assigned.
- Devices registered as STATIC-DHCP will receive a consistent reserved IP address from the defined DHCP network range.
- The STATIC-DHCP address assignment is only valid within the facility/building where the device is registered.
- DNS lookup for STATIC-DHCP addresses is only valid once a DHCP address has been offered by the DHCP server and leased by the client device.
- The device will have a consistent DNS name associated with the consistently assigned IP address.
STATIC
STATIC registration generates only a DNS entry and associates the DNS name with a specific, consistent reserved IP address. No DHCP service is offered for STATIC registrations. The DNS will provide a lookup service at all times. This network registration classification is only available to faculty and staff on the wired network and may require justification before an address is assigned.
