Canvas, WebAssign, and Respondus LockDown Browser

The Respondus LockDown Browser (LDB) is a locked web browser for taking online assessments. It prevents users from printing, copying, going to another URL, or accessing other applications during an assessment.

Since the move to online has become more prevalent, instructors are now utilizing the Respondus LDB for their WebAssign homework assessments.

The Respondus LDB in WebAssign is different than the Respondus LDB that is located in Online@UT (Canvas). Yes, this can be a bit confusing because they are both a version of Respondus.

Students can have both versions on their computers:

  • The WebAssign version is Respondus OEM - This LDB must be downloaded from the following URL: https://www.webassign.net/manual/student_guide/install-lockdown-browser.htm as it is specific to WebAssign.
    • How to use (dependent on how your instructor provides access to your WebAssign course):
    1. Log in to Canvas via a regular browser window (Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Edge) with your NetID, Password, and authenticate.
    2. Access your Canvas course site and navigate to the respective WebAssign assignment.
    3. Click the WebAssign assignment and it will automatically launch the WebAssign LDB.
NOTE: Do not open the WebAssign LDB first as it will not work.

  • The UTK Canvas version is just Respondus - This LDB must be downloaded from the following URL: https://download.respondus.com/lockdown/download.php?id=645740725 as it is specific to UTK. All other versions will not work.
    • How to use: depending on how your instructor is using the Canvas Quiz tool, you may encounter different paths to accessing your online quiz -
    1. Log in to Canvas via a regular browser window (Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Edge) with your NetID, Password, and authenticate.
    2. Access your Canvas course site and navigate to the respective online exam.
    3. After clicking the online exam link, one of two things will happen:

a. the Respondus LDB will automatically launch
- or -
b. you will be prompted to download and install the Respondus LDB as identified in this screenshot:

If you receive the message prompt, you will need to download and install the Respondus LDB first and then follow these steps to return to your online exam:

  1. Open the Respondus LDB application first to access the authentication window.
  2. Log in to Canvas with your NetID, Password, and authenticate.
  3. Access your Canvas course site and navigate to the respective online exam.

For the WebAssign version of the LDB here are some helpful download and installation tips:

  1. Mac users - It is best to download the zip file in Safari. Chrome or Firefox are still the recommended browsers when completing the WebAssign assignments.
  2. PC users - Sometimes when the Windows link to download is clicked, nothing happens, however, if the student right clicks on the link and chooses to open in a new tab, it will download correctly.
  3. The LDB should notify students to close any open windows/documents but a best practice would be to do this prior to launching the LDB assignment.
