Microsoft Teams: Team Naming Convention Policy

Overview

OIT has implemented a naming policy for Microsoft Teams to align with the existing Office 365 Groups policy. This policy ensures consistency and prevents naming conflicts with NetIDs.

Details

  • Prefix Requirement: All Microsoft Teams names will include the prefix “UT_”, matching the Office 365 Groups naming convention.
  • Scope:
    • Applies to all new Teams created after the policy was implemented.
    • Applies to existing Teams only when their names are edited after the policy is in place.
  • Purpose:
    • Prevents conflicts between Team names and NetIDs.
    • Maintains uniformity across Office 365 Groups and Teams.

Background

When Office 365 Groups were introduced, OIT added the “UT_” prefix to group names to avoid conflicts with NetIDs. Microsoft Teams, which creates an Office 365 Group on the backend, initially did not honor this policy. To resolve this, OIT configured a Teams-specific naming policy that enforces the same prefix requirement.

Effective Date

The policy was configured on Thursday, August 17, 2023, and remains in effect.
