Microsoft Outlook: Sending Limits for Email

Overview

To help prevent spam and phishing, Microsoft enforces email send limits based on volume per minute, hour, and 24-hour period. These limits apply to both internal and external messages.

At UTK, send limits are tied to your UPN (User Principal Name) - the email address you use to sign in. Microsoft also sets a higher limit for internal emails (those sent to other UTK addresses) than external emails (emails sent to non UTK addresses).

Exceeding these limits will cause the email to fail to send, and it will need to be resent. If you are blocked from sending emails, or if you want to update your UPN, please reach out to the OIT HelpDesk at (865) 974-9900, or submit a ticket online at help.utk.edu.
