Microsoft Outlook: Take Action on Junk Email

Overview

Most junk mail messages delivered to your Inbox are from reputable companies/vendors and are not spam messages from unknown sources trying to obtain your personal information. You can unsubscribe from these distribution lists by choosing "unsubscribe" at the bottom of the message. Do not provide passwords or personal information when unsubscribing from these distribution lists.

However, when unsubscribing doesn't work, you may want to take additional action. You can report the message to Microsoft and/or block the sender from within Outlook.

Report the Message to Microsoft

  1. From your Outlook Inbox, select the message, then select the Report Message button located in the ribbon at the top of the window.
  2. Select the category of the message:
    • Junk email:  General junk, spam, or unwanted email messages.
    • Phishing emails:  Suspicious emails that attempt to solicit information from you.
    • Not Junk: Used for legitimate emails that the Outlook filter marked as Junk.

Block a sender

When you no longer want to see messages from someone, you can block a sender.

  • From Outlook, right-click a message from the sender you want to block, and then click Junk > Block Sender.
