YouTube: Captioning Video Lecture

Overview

Subtitles and closed captions open up your content to a larger audience, including deaf or hard of hearing viewers or those who speak languages besides the one spoken in your video.

  1. Go to your Video Manager (http://www.youtube.com/my_videos) or click your account in the top right > Creator Studio > Video Manager > Videos.
  2. Next to the video you want to add captions or subtitles to, click the drop-down menu next to the Edit button.
  3. Select Subtitles and CC.
  4. Automatic Captions
    1. You will see the Automatic Captions indicated by (Automatic). YouTube automatically creates captions. However, they are far too inaccurate to be used on their own. If you want to use the automatic captions, you must always edit them.
    2. Click on the English (Automatic) button
    3. Click Edit
    4. Click where you want to make changes and edit the text.
    5. Then change the timing of the transcript to match the audio with the video. Hover the mouse over the text below the video. Click, hold and drag the blue handles to shorten or lengthen the time. Click, hold and drag from the middle to move entire block.
  5. Transcripts from other sources
  6. If you already have a script for your video outside of YouTube, you can upload the file to create captions. Click the Add new subtitles or CC button.
  7. Select the language and choose how you want to add or edit subtitles or closed captions to your video; upload file, transcribe and auto-sync, or create new subtitles or CC. Add your transcripts.
  8. Once editing is complete, click Publish edits
  9. The edited transcript will override the automatic captions when the video is viewed with closed captions enabled.
