Canvas Catalog: Enroll in a Course

This article explains how to enroll in a Canvas Catalog course. Instructions differ depending on your user type:

Important:

  • UTK users automatically receive a UTK account in Canvas Catalog.
  • Non-UTK users must create a Canvas Catalog account.
  • If you have trouble logging in or creating an account, please contact Canvas Catalog Help.

UTK Users

  1. Visit UT Canvas Catalog and select a course of interest OR follow the link shared by the instructor. The course listing page will be displayed.
  2. Select the Enroll button.
  3. Select Sign in to enroll. 
  4. Select Log in with UTK NetID.
  5. Enter your UTK NetID and password and complete DUO authentication if prompted. NOTE: Starting May 27, 2026, sign-in requires a UPN (UT email address)
  6. Select Enroll in Course.
    • NOTE: To enroll in a course that has a fee:
      • Enter a Promotion Code if you have one and select Apply.
      • Select Proceed to Payment to complete your enrollment. You will be presented with a secure payment page. Follow the prompts on the screen to complete your payment.
  7. Upon successful enrollment, a confirmation message will be displayed on your screen and a Catalog Enrollment Confirmation email will be sent to the email address associated with your UTK account.
  8. Select Go to Course. You will be taken to the Canvas Catalog course. Begin learning! NOTE: Bookmark the course for a quicker access.

To access the courses/programs in which you are enrolled:

  1. Visit UT Canvas Catalog.
  2. Select Login or Create Guest Account in the upper right-hand corner.
  3. Select Log in with UTK NetID.
  4. Enter your UTK NetID and password and complete DUO authentication if prompted. NOTE: Starting May 27, 2026, sign-in requires a UPN (UT email address)
  5. Upon successful login, you will access the Student Dashboard page that lists courses in which you are enrolled. You can go straight to the Canvas environment by selecting My Courses in the drop-down menu next to your name in the upper right-hand corner.   6. Select the Go to Course next to a course title. You will be taken to the Canvas Catalog course. 

Non-UTK Returning Users

  1. Visit UT Canvas Catalog and select a course of interest, OR follow the link shared by the instructor. The course listing page will be displayed.
  2. Select the Enroll button.
  3. Select Sign in to enroll. You will be presented with two login options.
  4. Select Log in without UTK NetID.
  5. Enter the email address and password you used to create your UT Canvas Catalog user account. Note that you can change your password.
  6. Select Enroll in Course.
    • NOTE: To enroll in a course that has a fee:
      • Enter a Promotion Code if you have one and select Apply.
      • Select Proceed to Payment to complete your enrollment. You will be presented with a secure payment page. Follow the prompts on the screen to complete your payment.
  7. Upon successful enrollment, a confirmation message will be displayed on your screen and a Catalog Enrollment Confirmation email will be sent to the email address associated with your UTK account.
  8. Select Go to Course. You will be taken to the Canvas Catalog course. Bookmark the course for a quicker access.

To access the course in which you are enrolled:

  1. Visit UT Canvas Catalog.
  2. Select Login or Create Guest Account in the upper right-hand corner.
  3. Select Log in without UTK NetID.
  4. Enter the email address and password you used to create your UT Canvas Catalog user account. Note that you can change your password.
  5. Upon successful sign-in, you will access the Student Dashboard page that lists courses in which you are enrolled. Student Dashboard is also available by selecting Student Dashboard in the drop-down menu next to your name in the upper right-hand corner.   6. Select Go to Course  next to a course title. You will be taken to the Canvas Catalog course.

Non-UTK First-time Users

Step 1. Access the course listing.

Visit UT Canvas Catalog and select a course or program of interest, OR select the link shared by the instructor.

Step 2. Select Enroll.

Select the Enroll button on the listing page. You will be presented with an option to sign in or sign up. As a new user, you want to sign up for a new account.

Note: If the course/program has a fee, the amount will be displayed on the "Enroll" button.

Step 3 for No Fee Course. Sign Up for a User Account. 

Fill out the Sign up here! online form and select Register New Guest Account. Note: Depending on the department offering the course, you may have additional fields to complete.

Step 3 for a Fee-based Course. Sign Up for a User Account and Proceed to Pay.

Fill out the Sign up here! online form, enter a Promotion Code if you have one and select Apply, and select Register New Account. Note: Depending on the department offering the course, you may have additional fields to complete.

 

NOTE: After selecting "Register New Account" users enrolling in a fee-based course will be presented with a secure payment page. Follow the prompts on the screen to complete your payment.

The next page displays the "Almost There" message.

"Check your email" message

NOTE: Canvas Catalog will automatically send email to the email address indicated in your account registration. You need to locate the email, complete your user account registration and create a password for your account.

Step 4. Access your email and confirm the account registration.

Check your email for a Welcome to Catalog message stating that you successfully registered a new account. In the email, select Complete Registration.

Note: You will be presented with the Welcome Aboard page. Your login ID is the email you indicated in your guest account registration. You will need to create a password for your account.

Step 5. Create a password for your new user account

  • Enter a password of your choosing.
  • Select your Time Zone.
  • Select Register.

After successful registering, you will be presented with Canvas Catalog Student Dashboard page in your web browser. If you need to log in, make sure to log in "Without UTK NetID." 

 

Step 6. Access your course in Catalog Student Dashboard

Select "Begin Course". Note: Your course appears under the In Progress tab.

You will be taken to the Canvas Catalog course.

Step 7. Begin learning!

Bookmark your Canvas Catalog course for a quick access.

Step 8. Save Your Catalog Enrollment Confirmation Email

Check your email for the Catalog Enrollment Confirmation message stating that you are enrolled in the course.

Save the email for your records.
