Canvas: User Guide

Within Canvas if a course site is listed as published, students and instructors can see and access course materials and tools. If a course site is listed as unpublished, instructors can see and access course materials and tools, while students cannot.

Know your DUE date and time. If your instructor gives you a time block of one, two, or several days to complete an exam/quiz/test, DO NOT wait until the last minute to do it. Should any technical problems arise, you’re less likely to get them solved at the end of the quiz time block.

Combining course sites in Online@UT (Canvas) is known as cross-listing.

Before you can cross-list your Online@UT (Canvas) course sites, please read through these prerequisites:

• You must be enrolled as a Primary Instructor in each section that you would like to cross-list in Canvas
• Do not place content in the Child sections; it will not be visible after you cross-list the child with the Parent section.

You can copy course content such as assignments, modules, pages, and discussions from previous Canvas courses into existing courses. The Course Import Tool allows you to copy content into existing courses.

University of Tennessee policy (Board Policy BT0024) is that instructors generally retain the copyright to the instructional materials that they produce for use in the classroom. 

The main exception to this general rule is when the creation of instructional materials is specially commissioned, which might be the case, for example, if the materials were developed using grant or contract funds. Because instructors retain the copyright to their instructional materials, they can control the distribution or redistribution of these materials. It is a violation of copyright law for a student to upload instructional materials to a third-party aggregator website, such as CourseHero or StudyBlue, without the instructor’s permission.
