Summary
If you are trying to take a Proctorio quiz on a Mac, but cannot get past the Desktop Sharing pre-check, follow these instructions to resolve the issue.

Summary
This article provides the steps for making sure your Mac computer is allowing Google Chrome and the Proctorio extension to share your screen.
Overview
In macOS, there is a privacy setting that prevents your screen from being shared or recorded unless you allow it. The Proctorio extension relies on screen recording permission to proctor your exam, so if this permission is turned off, you will see the desktop sharing pre-check turn red with an 'X' and you won't be able to take your test.
How To Fix Problems with Screen Recording Permissions
- Click the Apple menu () in the top left corner of the screen. Choose System Preferences from the menu that appears.
- Select the category called Security and Privacy, then choose the Privacy tab from the row that appears near the top.
- Click the yellow padlock in the lower left corner to unlock the controls on this page. Note that an administrator password is required to do this.
- In the sidebar on the left, scroll down, then click on the Screen Recording option. The list of apps on the right should change to show which ones have screen recording permission.
- If Google Chrome is NOT listed, click the + button to add it. Chrome is located in the Applications folder.
- If Google Chrome is listed, but does NOT have a checkmark next to it, click the empty box to add the checkmark. This will grant Chrome access to record your screen. Click the Quit & Reopen button that appears to restart Chrome and finish granting the permissions.
- If Google Chrome is listed and already has a checkmark next to it, uncheck the box to remove the screen recording permissions, then click Quit & Reopen. Once Chrome has reopened, switch back to System Preferences, check the box again, and click Quit & Reopen again. This should reset the permissions and fix the problem.
If following these steps does not resolve the problem, please contact Proctorio support via the live chat function (built-in to the Proctorio extension) or call the OIT HelpDesk at (865) 974-9900 for further assistance.
