How to Use My Phone as a Document Camera or Camera in Zoom

If you need to show something on Zoom that you would normally show on a camera or document camera, you can do this using your smartphone.

  • To use your phone as a camera, you can record the subject you want to show to share later or you can set the phone on a tripod or use a steady hand to share something live in the meeting.
  • To use your phone as a document camera, you can set the phone on a small tripod or stack of books to point the phone's camera at the item you wish to share.

Then, follow these instructions for joining your phone to the Zoom session you are hosting.

  1. Download the Zoom client to your phone from your app store.
  2. Log in with your account. (Don't forget to choose the SSO login!)
  3. Join your class in progress.
Important Tip: make sure you do NOT join audio from your phone or you'll get an echo.
  4. When you're ready to write, draw, or show an object, go to Zoom on your phone and choose Share Screen
