What's the difference between Copilot and Cowork?

Overview

Microsoft Copilot Cowork is Microsoft's agentic AI experience in Microsoft Copilot. It is designed to complete longer-running, multi-step tasks on a user's behalf. Unlike Copilot Chat, which helps answer questions or draft content, Copilot Cowork can develop a plan, perform multiple actions, and request approval when needed.

Eligibility

To request Microsoft Copilot Cowork, the requester must have a Copilot Premium license.

Request Access

  1. Submit a request through the Microsoft Licensing Form.
  2. Request Microsoft Copilot Cowork using the same process used for other Microsoft licenses.
  3. If you do not already have a Copilot Premium license, it will be added alongside your Cowork request. 

About Microsoft Copilot Cowork

Microsoft Copilot Cowork can perform multi-step tasks on a user's behalf.

Example:

  • Copilot Chat: “Help me write an email.”
  • Copilot Cowork: “Review my meeting notes, draft the email, send it to the project team, schedule a follow-up meeting, and create a status report.”

Copilot Cowork can assist with:

  • Drafting and sending Outlook emails
  • Scheduling meetings and managing calendars
  • Creating Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and PDF files
  • Posting messages in Teams
  • Searching organizational content
  • Managing files in OneDrive and SharePoint
  • Researching topics and compiling findings
  • Running recurring tasks on a schedule

Copilot Cowork is designed for outcome-based requests. A user describes the desired outcome, Copilot Cowork develops a plan, completes the steps, and requests approval when needed.
