DEVICE ASSET NAMING AND ENTRY 

Defining the proper naming, entry and registration of Facilities assets 

All Facilities Services assets must be accurately assigned in Snipe, NetReg and Active Directory. The following information is provided to facilitate standardization of how all assets are recorded. This procedure is relevant to and to be used in tandem with the PC/Laptop Imaging Process document. 

 

NetReg 

  1. Windows Based devices: 

    EX.  UTKFS123456 

    EX. UTKFS123456 

    EX. UTKFS123456-LAN2 

    EX. UTKFS123456-WLAN 

    EX. UTKFS123456-Dock 

    1. Device Serial numbers will be given the UTKFS prefix to establish the root name 

    2. Onboard Ethernet ports will be named as the root name for the device   

    3. Secondary Ethernet ports will be named as the root name for the device and appended with the -LAN2 designation 

    4. Onboard Wireless ports will consist of the root name and be appended with the -WLAN designation 

    5. Pass through ports will consist of the root name and be appended with the -DOCK designation 

IOS devices (iPad): 

EX.  UTK-FS-IOS-123456 

  1. Device Serial numbers will be given the UTK-FS-IOS prefix to establish the root name 

  2. Resource groups should be selected using FS for computing devices, FSMobile for tablet/IOS and PP for user owned devices, vendor owned devices or conference guests. 

  3. Device Hostname should be set to end with the FS.UTK.EDU domain. 

 

Snipe IT 

  1. All Windows Based devices will be named using the Device Serial numbers with the UTKFS prefix.  

EX.  UTKFS123456 

i.   All assets will require entry of the Wireless MAC, Ethernet MAC(s) and pass thru MAC. (As available/ needed by device).   Pass thru MAC will be recorded under the Other MAC Address 

iii.  Dell Docks or Monitors with Docking need to be registered as a separate device. 

b.   All IOS devices will be given the UTK-FS-IOS prefix to establish the root name 

i.     IOS items will require entry of the Wireless MAC 

c.   Where possible, notes should include year of purchase and warranty months should be   entered 

d.    Default location should be set to Facilities Services Complex-01-122a 

 

Active Directory 

  1. Device Serial numbers will be given the UTKFS prefix to establish the root name 

      EX.  UTKFS123456
