DNS: Change Settings to Google Public DNS

Overview

Changing your device’s DNS settings can sometimes improve connection reliability or resolve issues loading certain websites. This article walks you through updating your DNS configuration to use Google Public DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) on Windows and macOS.

Warning: Adjusting DNS settings is optional and should be done at your own risk. OIT cannot guarantee performance improvements.

Windows 10/11

  1. Open the Start Menu and type Control Panel.
  2. Select Network and Internet, then Network and Sharing Center.
  3. Choose Change adapter settings on the left.
  4. Right‑click your active network connection and select Properties.
  5. Highlight Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and select Properties.
  6. Select Use the following DNS server addresses.
  7. Change your DNS settings to:
    • Preferred DNS server: 8.8.8.8
    • Alternate DNS server: 8.8.4.4
  8. Select OK, then close all windows.

macOS

  1. Open System Settings (or System Preferences on older versions).
  2. Select Network.
  3. Choose your active network connection.
  4. Select Details.
  5. Open the DNS tab.
  6. Use the Add (+) button to add the following:
    • 8.8.8.8
    • 8.8.4.4
  7. Select OK, then Apply.

Reverting to Default DNS

If you experience issues after switching to Google DNS, you can return to your original settings by following the steps above and setting DNS to Automatic.
