Banner: "Service Invocation Error" in Firefox

Overview

Firefox users may receive a ‘Service Invocation Error’ or 'Session Initialization Failed - Couldn't access remote session service' error in Banner. The issue is resolved by using a private window, disabling enhanced tracking protection, or removing extensions in Firefox. 

Troubleshooting Options

Cross-site tracking cookies

  1. In the Firefox browser, select the menu icon at the top right, then Setting in the menu.

  2. Select Privacy & Security on the left side of the Settings window.
  3. Select Custom, then change Cookies to Cross-site tracking cookies.

Disable Enhanced Tracking Protection

There have been recent reports of this error in newer Firefox versions (including 102) when accessing Banner Admin Pages.

  1. Open Banner Admin Pages and click the shield icon to the left of the URL.
  2. You will see that Enhanced tracking protection is ON for this site. Slide to OFF.

Private window in Firefox:

  1. Select the menu button, then New Private Window.
  2. The Private Browsing home page will open in a new window.

Removing extensions in Firefox: 

  1. Select the menu button, then Add-ons > Extensions.
  2. Scroll through the list of extensions, and click the ellipsis (3-dot) icon for the extension you wish to remove and select Remove. It is unknown at this time which extension(s) cause an issue with the Banner system. You may want to try removing extensions one at a time to locate the problem extension. 
  3. If extensions are removed, restart Firefox and try again.
  • Note: If no extensions were installed, uninstall and reinstall Firefox.
