Canvas: Add a Banner to a Course Site

Summary

How to add a banner to a Canvas course site.

Body

If you are using either the Syllabus or a Content Page as your course Home page, then you can add a course banner.

You will use the content selector to insert graphics and images into your course content. Here's how:

  1. Enter your Canvas course site.
  2. In the Course Navigation menu, select the Home link.
  3. Click on the Edit button.
  4. In the Rich Content Editor, put your cursor where you want to insert the image.
  5. On the Content Selector, click the Images tab.
  6. Click on the Upload a new image link.
  7. In the Folder box, select the folder in which to store the image. If you have not created any folders, Canvas adds the image to the Course Files folder, which is the default folder.
  8. Click on the Choose File button.
  9. On your computer or storage media, navigate and select the banner image file you want to use.
  10. Click on the Upload button - your image should now appear.
  11. Enter appropriate alternative text for accessibility.
  12. Be sure to click on the Save button at the bottom of the page.

Image Considerations:

  • Accepted banner images include JPG, JPEG, and PNG files.
  • The image should be no larger than 700 pixels wide and 200 pixels high.
  • Very large images are not recommended; at best they can be disorienting and at worse they can be an impediment.
  • Images that are much wider horizontally than they are tall tend to work best for course site banners.
